The rules for writing Roman numerals are as follows.
1. If the number on the left is smaller than the number on the right, it means that the number symbol is reduced.
2. If the number on the right is less than or equal to the number on the left, it means adding up.
Example:
a. XX = 10 + 10 = 20
b. VII = 5 + 1 + 1 = 7
c. LV = 50 + 5 = 55
3. Writing of the same Roman numeral symbol may only be written three times in a row.
a. III means 1 + 1 + 1 = 3
b. CCC means 100 + 100 + 100 = 300
c. XXX means 10 + 10 + 10 = 30
Note that 40 cannot be written as XXXX (four consecutive writings of the same symbol).
4. Subtraction rule:
a. I can only be used to reduce V and X.
b. X can only be used to reduce L and C.
c. C can only be used to reduce D and M
